Pencils wound with colorful floss make great gifts to pen pals on Valentine's Day!
    You will need:
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery floss (3 colors for a 3 color pencil)
  • Ruler
  • About 15 assorted small beads (size 6)
  • 2 large beads
  • tape
  • 1 sharpened pencil
  • Craft glue

Step 1

To make a three-color pencil, cut 1 piece of embroidery floss 4 inches long. Tie a double knot near one end. String a small bead first, then add other beads. Tape the end of the floss to the top of the pencil, right below the metal band.

Step 2

Cut a piece of floss 5 feet long. Tape 1 end to the top of the pencil, right below the metal band. Wrap the floss tightly around the pencil 10 times, covering the taped ends.

Step 3

String a small bead on the floss and push it up to the pencil. Keep winding the floss, adding a bead about every 10 times around. When you have covered about a third of the pencil, tape the floss to the pencil and trim off any excess floss. (To make stringing beads easier, use a needle to thread the floss through the bead.

Step 4

Cut a different colored piece of floss 5 feet long. Tape the end of the new piece of floss right where the end of the hold one is taped. Begin winding the floss, adding a bead about every 10 times around.

Step 5

When you have civered the middle third of the pencil, tape the floss to the pencil and trim off any excess floss. Repeat step 4 with a new color of floss. (Variation: USe shorter pieces of floss to make many bands. For stripes, wrap with 2 colors at the same time.

Step 6

When you get to the bottom of the pencil, use a dab of glue to hold the floss in place. Trim off any excess floss. Let dry. To sharpen the pencil, unstick the end, unwind the floss, trim, and glue in place again. Other twists: cut all flkoss pieces ffom one color, or add bands of gold floss. Use buttons and charms, too!
