Thanksgiving Salt Dough Models
Salt dough models make great decorations and gifts that children can make. Make magnets, nameplates, ornaments, and lots of other decorations.
Recipe For Salt Dough
Stir together:
2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
1 cup cold water
2 tablespoons cooking oil
Knead with your hands until it forms a soft ball. Keep your fingertips covered with flour so that the dough does not stick.
Line a baking tray with aluminum foil. Make your models and then bake them in the oven at 300° for at least an hour or until completely hard.
Coloring Dough
There are different ways you can color your dough.
- Food Coloring: Divide dough into several balls and add different a few drops of food coloring to each ball. Knead the dough until the color is mixed in.
- Egg Yolk: If you use plain dough you can make your models look shiny by brushing them with egg yolk before you bake them.
- Painting: If you like to paint you can bake your models and then paint them.
Other Fun Tips
- Put the dough through a garlic squeezer to make strands of hair.
- Use knives, forks, and pastry cutters to give your models different textures.
- Make little models and then stick magnets to the back to use as a refrigerator magnet. Would make a great gift.
- Place a hole in the top before baking. Then put a string through and voila you have a Christmas ornament.
- You can make nameplates for desks, bedroom doors, and table settings. Just make your model and leave a flat area to paint the name after baking.
