An ordinary purchased sweatshirt can become unique when you stencil on some favorite things for Dad with fast drying acrylic paint. Sign your name at the bottom for a truly memorable gift.
    You will need:
  • Heavy Acetate
  • X-acto Knife or Hot Knife
  • Masking Tape
  • Stencil Brush
  • Illinois Bronze Acrylic Fabric Paint
  • 2 Sheets Cardboard
  • Work Table
  • Paper Towels
  • Water
  • Purchased Sweatshirt
Step 1
Enlarge and draw designs on paper in full scale (see stencil designs below), arranging to cover sweatshirt front. Arrange motifs in horizontal rows. Cover worktable with heavy cardboard. Tape drawing to back of acetate. Using X-acto or hot knife, cut out stencils.
Step 2
Lay sweatshirt out on worktable right side up. Slide a piece of cardboard between back and front of shirt so paint will not penetrate to reverse side. Using one color at a time, stencil on designs according to following directions.
Stenciling Fabric Directions
Step 1
Never use water with fabric paint, it will run.
Step 2
When mixing colors with white, put white on palette first, and then add tiny dashes of color until you achieve desired shade.
Step 3
Be sure brush is clean and dry. When washing brush between colors, dry thoroughly with paper towel before using again. Stencil lightest colors first. Work one color at a time, rinsing brush thoroughly with water and drying brush completely between colors.
Step 4
Dip just flat tip of brush straight down into paint; blot tip of brush on folded paper towel until bristles are almost dry.
Step 5
Apply paint in appropriate area of stencil, using circular stroke, or dabbing flat tip of brush directly against fabric. Start painting on edge of stencil cut out and work towards center.
