Pine Cone Fire Starters
Hints: The scent must be essential oils, the type used in potpourri or candle making available at your local craft store or candle supply store. (Note: color and scents are not required for the pine cone to become an effective fire starter. )

What is needed:
2 pounds of paraffin wax
Pine cones
Double boiler
Candle coloring. (optional)
Essential oils (for scent). (optional)
Thick string
Wax paper

(Note: The wax has be be melted in a double boiler. To make a double boiler suitable for doing this project, you need a metal can large enough to hold your biggest pine cone. The can should have at least two inches of extra room above the pine cone. To keep track of how much wax to put in, place a mark on the can at the height where your biggest pine cone comes up to. Put the large can in a pan of water on the stove.)

Directions:
1. Prepare the double boiler.

2. Break off pieces from the paraffin wax and put them into the can, allow the pieces to melt. Continue to do this until the melted wax comes up to the line. Try to keep the wax at its lowest melting point (which on conventional stoves is about medium to low heat.) (Note: at this point if you want to use coloring or scent than add it and mix well.)

3. Take some string and tie it around the top of one of the pine cones.

4. While holding the string, slowly dip the pine cone into the wax. Remove the pine cone from the can and allow it to drip over the can until it stops.

5. Place the pine cone on a piece of the wax paper and allow to fully dry.

6. Continue the process until all of your pine cones have been dipped into the wax.

7. Starting with the first pine cone that you dipped, re-dip until nice layer of wax has built up on cones. (add more wax if necessary.)

To use a fire starter pine cone, place it on top of the kindling and light one of the edges.

Warning: If you scented the pine cones with essential oil, it should not be put on wood furniture because it will damage the finish.
