Home Projects 3-picture Home Project January 9, 1999:
Stepped Stop to Set Depth of Drill

You can drill holes accurately to any depth with a stepped stop.

Make it from 3/4" hardwood so it will stand a alot of use.
With a backsaw or bandsaw, cut a series of 1/8" or 1/4" steps 3/4" square. Then drill a 1/4" hole through the center of each, being sure to get them perpedicular. Don't try to calibrate the steps, as drills of different sizes vary in length.
To use the gauge, chuck the drill bit and try it in the various holes. Measure the amount it extends through the gauge until you find a step that will give the required drilling depth. You can get more precise adjustment by loosening the chuck and moving the drill bit out a little farther. You may want to make another one with larger holes to accomodate larger sized drill bits.
