Home Project January 9, 1999: Stepped Stop to Set Depth of Drill You can drill holes accurately to any depth with a stepped stop. Make it from 3/4" hardwood so it will stand a alot of use. With a backsaw or bandsaw, cut a series of 1/8" or 1/4" steps 3/4" square. Then drill a 1/4" hole through the center of each, being sure to get them perpedicular. Don't try to calibrate the steps, as drills of different sizes vary in length. |
|
To use the gauge, chuck the drill bit and try it in the various holes. Measure the amount
it extends through the gauge until you find a step that will give the required drilling depth.
You can get more precise adjustment by loosening the chuck and moving the drill bit out a
little farther. You may want to make another one with larger holes to accomodate larger
sized drill bits. | |
