Take a trip down to Texas sometime and be sure to “remember the Alamo.” In 1836, Texans won their independence from Mexico, shouting that rallying cry. They were remembering the 188 Texans who died defending the Alamo from the much larger Mexican army. Today, most of the Alamo is gone, but you can still visit the Long Barrack and the mission church. There’s a museum that outlines the site’s history, and an artifact collection from the Alamo’s glory days. While you’re in the area, why don’t you make a day of it? Nearby, there’s a long River Walk, filled with cafes, restaurants, hotels, bars, and a huge shopping mall. Not to mention the tropical foliage that covers the area. Just remember that this peaceful location was hard fought for—much blood was spilled, many lives taken. Have a great trip, but take a few minutes to stop and remember the Alamo. And that’s Getaway Update for this week
