Welcome to Computer Report for the week of Aug...
Welcome to Computer Report for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 2. Linux is taking another dip into desktop waters. The company nicknamed “Red Hat” is preparing a version of Linux for use on corporate workstations. Traditionally, Linux has failed to make any impact on the desktop operating system market. But things are starting to change because Sun Microsystems, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard are throwing their weight behind it. The company has released a beta version of its general-purpose Red Hat Linux operating system, code-named Limbo, that’ll be the company's first version designed for the desktop. Microsoft has picked the first birthday of the Xbox, November 15, as the U.S. launch date for Xbox Live. It’s an online gaming service for the game console. At launch, about 5,000 U.S. retailers will offer the $49.95 Xbox Live starter kits that includes a year's subscription to Xbox live, an Xbox Communicator headset to chat with fellow gamers, and an online racing game. The November 15 launch date means Sony Computer Entertainment America gets a head start with online gaming. Sony plans to start selling a network adaptor for its PlayStation 2 for $39.99 this month. That’s Computer Report for this week.
