Lawyers representing Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions President Lovemore Matombo and Secretary General Wellington Chibebe on Friday filed an urgent high court application asking that the judiciary order police to arraign or release them.

The trade unionists were arrested Thursday on charges they made false statements in a May Day speech in Harare and had incited the public to rebellion.

Lawyer Charles Kwaramba, representing the two labor officials, told Patience Rusere of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that his clients have no case to answer.

Elsewhere, Standard newspaper editor Davison Maruziva, arrested Thursday on charges he had published falsehoods, was released Friday on bail of Z$10 billion dollars with his case remanded until May 23, legal sources said.

Human rights lawyer and press defender Harrison Nkomo, arrested earlier this week on charges of insulting President Robert Mugabe, was freed on Z$5 billion bail.
