U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi is in Baghdad Saturday for talks with senior U.S. and Iraqi officials.

A U.S. Embassy spokeswoman says Pelosi arrived in the Iraqi capital earlier today on a previously unannounced visit. The spokeswoman did not provide details of the trip.

Pelosi is a senior figure in the Democratic party and a key critic of President Bush's war policy in Iraq.

Meanwhile, Iraq's military says its forces have detained more than 1,000 suspects in an ongoing offensive aimed at defeating al-Qaida militants in the northern city of Mosul.

The Iraqi government announced Friday that it would offer militants in Mosul cash and amnesty if they turn in their weapons. The city is considered the last major urban stronghold of al-Qaida in Iraq.
