Scientists may have discovered a new way of helping treat victims of Alzheimer’s. Knowing that many Alzheimer’s patients are easily disoriented, often tending to get lost quickly, scientists have begun studying a special section of the brain. This section, the medial superior temporal area, is located just above and behind the ear. Acting as the body’s compass, it helps us keep track of our body movements. While scientists have long known that this portion of the brain aids in special orientation, they didn’t realize just how important it was. Upon further study, however, they’ve noticed that this section of the brain is often ravaged by Alzheimer’s. While treating this area won’t eliminate the disease, it may be a large step in learning to treat Alzheimer’s patients, helping them regain their independence. And that’s Science News for this week
