Singer-song writer Paul Simon is replacing former Beatle Paul McCartney as a recipient of this year's Kennedy Center Honors.
The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington honors a group of performers every year. Paul McCartney was originally selected as part of this year's group. But last week he sent regrets saying personal reasons prevented him for attending the December event. He did not elaborate. The Kennedy Center says Mr. McCartney has agreed to accept his honor next year.
Paul Simon, who the Kennedy Center says was on the list for an honor in the future, first came to prominence in the 1960's as part of the Simon and Garfunkel duo. Their songs included such hits as Sounds of Silence and Bridge Over Troubled Water. Mr. Simon has also had a very successful solo career. The Kennedy Center also praised him for his championing of international arts and artists.
Other honorees this year include Elizabeth Taylor and James Earl Jones. Traditionally, the president of the United States and the First Lady attend the ceremony.
