Thousands of Argentines marched Monday in Buenos Aires on the anniversary of a coup that launched seven years of dictatorship.

Many of the marchers called for speedier trials for people accused of abusing human rights during the so-called "Dirty War" from 1976 to 1983.

On March 24, 1976, the coup deposed then-President Maria Estela Isabel Martinez de Peron and gave way to the dictatorship.

Official estimates say some 13,000 people died or disappeared during the dictatorship, but human rights groups say some 30,000 people disappeared or were killed in a crackdown on leftist dissidents.

In 2005, Argentina's Supreme Court overturned amnesty laws protecting military and police officials from prosecution for human rights abuses during the Dirty War.
