In "JOY RIDE," three young people crossing the country by car have some deadly run-ins
with a homicidal truck driver. LeeLee Sobieski, Paul Walker and Steve Zahn co-star and "JOY
RIDE" downshifts to fifth place:ZOOLANDER:
"I CAUGHT MY REFLECTION IN A SPOON WHILE I WAS EATING MY CEREAL AND I REMEMBER THINKING
'WOW, YOU'RE RIDICULOUSLY GOOD-LOOKING."
"ZOOLANDER" puts a vain male supermodel Derek Zoolander in the middle of international
intrigue. The goofy comedy is written and directed by and stars Ben Stiller
STILLER: WHEN YOU MAKE A MOVIE LIKE THIS ALL YOU WANT IS TO MAKE PEOPLE LAUGH. THAT'S IT.
"ZOOLANDER" struts back to number four.
Last week's top film slips to third place. "DON'T SAY A WORD" features Michael Douglas as
a psychiatrist in a life and death race to pry a secret from a patient's twisted mind:
DON'T SAY A WORD:
"IS IT A TELEPHONE NUMBER?"
"NO."
"IS IT A CODE?"
"I'LL NEVER TELL . . . ANY OF YOU."
Brittany Murphy co-stars as the mental patient - n-o-t the first time the energetic
actress has played a character 'on the edge:'
MURPHY: I GET A CHANCE TO HIDE BEHIND THESE OTHER PEOPLE, SO BASICALLY (IT'S) WHATEVER GOES. IT'S
SO WONDERFUL. IT'S THIS GREAT FEELING BECAUSE YOU CAN FEEL ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU WANT
TO FEEL OR YOU CAN CRY OR ANYTHING. IT'S FREE REIN AND IT'S N-O-T YOU; IT'S JUST USING YOUR
OWN RESOURCES YOUR TEARS AND THINGS SO IT'S REALLY A GOOD LITTLE HIDEOUT WAY OF LIVING. I
LIKE PRETENDING.
"DON'T SAY A WORD" quiets down to number three.
New in second place: "SERENDIPITY:"
SERENDIPITY
"DON'T THINK ABOUT IT, JUST SAY THE FIRST THING THAT POPS INTO YOUR HEAD."
"YOU HAVE BEAUTIFUL EYES."
"THE SECOND THING THAT POPS INTO YOUR HEAD."
"YOU HAVE BEAUTIFUL EYES."
"COME ON NOW, STOP IT."
The romantic fantasy about love at first sight co-stars John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale:
BECKINSALE: IF YOU HAVE EVER HAD A MAGICAL BEGINNING TO A RELATIONSHIP IT CAN FEEL VERY CHARMED AND
FAIRY TALE-LIKE. YOU KIND OF LOOK BACK ON IT WHEN YOU'RE UP TO YOUR ELBOWS AND WASHING UP
OR WHATEVER. GETTING TOGETHER IS A MAGICAL MOMENT THAT ISN'T REALLY BASED IN REALITY
ANYWAY, SO I DIDN'T FIND A BIG PROBLEM WITH THAT.
"SERENDIPITY" gets its chance at number two, but the new first place film is "TRAINING
DAY," a gritty drama starring Denzel Washington, n-o-t as the hero this time, but as a
corrupt Los Angeles narcotics detective who breaks all the rules:
WASHINGTON: IT WAS A LOT OF FUN BECAUSE IT WAS NEW. I'VE DONE CLOSE TO 30 PICTURES NOW AND IT'S THE
FIRST TIME I'VE DONE ANYTHING LIKE THIS. IT WAS FUN TO BE ABLE TO SAY WHATEVER YOU WANTED
TO SAY AND GET AWAY WITH IT . . . AND NO ONE HAS EVER ASKED ME TO PLAY THE BAD GUY. I GUESS
THEY DON'T LOOK AT ME THAT WAY. MAYBE THEY WILL NOW.
TRAINING DAY:
"YOU WANT TO 'RUN AND GUN,' STAY IN PATROL. THIS IS INVESTIGATIONS. LET THE GARBAGE MEN
HANDLE THE GARBAGE. WE'RE PROFESSIONAL ANGLERS. WE GO AFTER THE BIG FISH. WHAT MORE DO YOU
WANT?"
"I WANT JUSTICE."
"IS THAT N-O-T JUSTICE?"
"THAT'S STREET JUSTICE."
"WHAT'S WRONG WITH STREET JUSTICE?"
"OH, JUST LET THE ANIMALS WIPE THEMSELVES OUT, RIGHT?"
"GOD WILLING."
Co-starring Ethan Hawke as an idealistic young cop determined to seek justice within the
law, "TRAINING DAY" arrests number one in its first week out: the new most popular movie
at North American theaters
