This week’s story is ‘The Hare and the Tortoise.’ ‘What a dull heavy creature you are,’ said the nimble-footed Hare to the Tortoise. ‘You trudge along in the mud, neither looking right nor left, only nibbling the driest grass that comes in your way. Why, you could make no more progress in a day’s march than I can accomplish in two or three bounds!’ ‘And yet,’ replied the Tortoise, ‘although I have neither lightness of foot, nor the symmetry of your haunches, I will undertake to run against you.’ ‘Agreed,’ said the Hare. A goal was named and the race was underway. The Tortoise kept jogging along at his usual rate and soon he was left in a cloud of dust by the very quick Hare. Soon the Hare grew tired of the race and he began to browse the choice plants by the roadside. Next the Hare saw his friends and went off to join them in a game. The Hare believed that he could catch the slow Tortoise because he had such a great gift of swiftness. But it seems the Hare became very sleepy after all his play and soon fell asleep. When he awoke it was dark, the weather had changed and the fields were heavy with rain. The Hare found that he could not run as fast as before. He was cold and tired and the rain slowed him down. But when he saw the winning post in the distance he put on speed.....still he was too late. The Tortoise was already across the finish line and was declared the winner of the race. That’s the story. Check back next week.
